Sparta Making Gains On Long-Term Paving Project

Sparta has made headway on its long-term paving plan, so much so that the city has shaved a year off its goal to repave every city street.

Public Works Director Dillard Quick said the paving plan could be finished as soon as 2026.

“With what we’ve got done if the prices continue to come in like it does and I hope it does, we may be able to scale one or two of these maps at least the last map off,” Quick said.

The eight-year paving plan comes from an evaluation of all 203 street in Sparta earlier this year. City Administrator Brad Hennessee said some 11 miles have been paved with three and a half more to go this fall.

“We will nearly be at 15 miles in two years, and that almost certainly has already done away with the 2027 map,” Hennessee said. “I am very well please with the progress on that, and our public works department has had a big hand in that.”

Quick said the fall paving will begin in about four to six weeks after completing North Church Street and Quill E Cope Street. Quick said paving local walking trials will also come next.

“We’re going to get the walking trails at South Carter and at the South Carter park paved at the same time,” Quick said. “Brad and I rode the roads yesterday and made a list of where we are going to try to replace all the signs.”
