Sparta Improving Neighborhood Intersection After Residential Request

Sparta installing new signs at the Oakland Drive and Sunrise Ridge Drive intersection following a resident’s concern for driver safety.

Resident Paul Livingston asked for a stop sign after an almost collision. City Administrator Brad Hennessee said an engineering judgement resulted in two new arrow signs and striping leading into the curve.

“The situation doesn’t merit any of the criteria that are required for stop signs,” Hennessee said. “We feel like the recommendations that were made were more than adequate.”

Hennessee said the new precautions would safely alert those unfamiliar with the neighborhood and clarify lane of travel. Hennessee said the city’s public works department will complete the project sometime this spring.

“That should probably be done within a month,” Hennessee said. “The signs will come first. The signs will be an improvement to what’s there, but the striping will complete the job.”

Hennessee said the recommendations were based off the Uniform Traffic Code manual. Hennessee said the project was also reviewed and approved by T-DOT.

“It is public safety and costs are secondary in that,” Hennessee said. “It is the right thing to do.”
