Sparta will improve its dam this spring by adding automatic gate openers.
The dam located on Highway 84 stores water from the Calfkiller River used as the city’s source. Public Works Director Dillard Quick said the gates are currently raised manually, so the upgrades will decrease the needed man power.

Quick said opening and closing the two gates takes about 400 turns often leading to exhaustion. Quick said the improvements will also make cleaning the water screens easier.
Quick said the city eventually wants to add components to open the gates remotely from the water plant.
