Sparta Finishing Electrical Work At Liberty Square After Weekend Outage

Electrical issues near the White County Courthouse has resulted in some road closures this week.

City Administrator Brad Hennessee said the electrical feed underground at Liberty Square shorted Saturday night during the city’s Memorial Day Concert.

“Had the courthouse and one of the traffic signals and some of the street lights around the square out and crews started work on that,” Hennessee said. “They dug out the old line and replaced the electrical.”

Hennessee said city workers finished replacing the wiring Monday night. Hennessee said a portion of South Main Street will be closed as the concrete sets.

“We expect to have traffic on Maple Street, east and west where they can drive as normal,” Hennessee said. “We’ll have metal plates over the concrete while it cures on the Maple Street side. Then we will leave the section of South Main from Maple back to Wall Street closed for traffic until the concrete cures.”

Hennessee said a cause for the shortage could not be determined since the short circuit burned into existing wiring. Hennessee said the electrical wiring dates back to the 1970’s when the courthouse was renovated.

“Once we got in there, all we found was a short circuit that essentially soldered itself together,” Hennessee said. “There’s really no way to really tell what happened..”
