Sparta Approves Second Reading of 2020 Budget

The Sparta City Council approved the second and final reading of the 2019-2020 budget Thursday.

Mayor Jeff Young said the budget keeps property taxes the same as last year.

“I feel like it’s a good thing. I think we have done all we can to keep taxes down,” Young said. “We work hard to do that every year while providing the service people want for the most part and I think it’s a good budget.”

Young said the budget allows funding for road improvements and other city projects.

“One thing we are trying to work on as much as possible this year as we can, of course always water and sewer improvements,” Young said. “Of course, we are aggressive to seek grant help on those just as every community around us is. Always need that state and federal government help to do that type of work.”

The budget sets aside approximately $300,000 for road improvements in the coming fiscal year.
