Smith Takes Over As Gainesboro Police Chief

Michael Smith taking over as Gainesboro Police Chief following the retirement of his mentor, Chief Michael Head.

Smith said he has worked in law enforcement for 31 years, 18 of them with the Gainesboro Police Department. He said he believes he has a headstart given that he is familiar with the department and the community. He said he was deeply honored to have been selected.

“It’s very humbling,” Smith said. “I feel very blessed that they feel like I can fill the shoes of our retired chief and keep Gainebsoro and its citizens and children safe.”

Smith served as Assistant Police Chief before being bumped up to chief. He said he has spent all 54 years of his life in Gainesboro and he is excited to continue to devote himself to the safety of its residents.

“All my family lives here and all my friends are here,” Smith said. “And if we don’t have the safety, especially in today’s world, then we don’t have anything.”

He said he developed a wealth of knowledge from Head, who served Gainesboro for 41 years. Smith said he has a great appreciation for Mayor Lloyd Williams and the Gainesboro Board of Aldermen for their belief that he is the right man for the job. He said he has several new ideas for his tenure as chief but is not ready to reveal those goals just yet.
