Slim Chance For An Upper Cumberland White Christmas This Year

Despite inclement weather forecasted for Christmas weekend this year, a white Christmas in the Upper Cumberland is not a common occurrence.

National Weather Service Meteorologist Krissy Hurley said over the last 150 years, there have been just three. The last was in 2010.

“We’re going to have the cold air around absolutely,” Hurley said. “But the problem for this year to get a white Christmas is the timing of the systems visiting Middle Tennessee and are they going to have any moisture with them? And that seems like that’s always the problem.”

Hurley said this season it looks like the cold air will be present for Christmas. However, she said right now forecasts do not look like they have the moisture to bring a white Christmas.

Hurley said while it may not look like a white Christmas, it will certainly feel like it.

“It’s going to be very, very cold, probably some fo the coldest temperatures we’ve seen this year,” Hurley said. “So bundle up and be prepared because those days are going to be unseasonably cold.”
