State officials said they are pleased with Monterey’s new sewer plant, but lifting a moratorium for the community will take time.
Department of Environment and Conservation Deputy Communications Director Kim Schofinski said current data shows the plant is operating well. Schofinski said they will continue to monitor the facility to see how the broader collection system responds over a longer period of time.
Schofinski said the process to lift a sewer moratorium has several steps including the evaluation of seasonal rainfall patterns in the area. Monterey’s permit with the state says the town has to develop and start carrying out a plan to correct the issue without causing any more overflow problems before it can start adding new connections.
