Senator Marsha Blackburn said infrastructure and the water supply are among the top issues for Van Buren County citizens.
Blackburn met with Van Buren officials and citizens Tuesday as part of her annual tour visiting community leaders in every county across the state.
“And it is wonderful to actually be on the ground and talk to people and local elected officials,” Blackburn said. “And what a great turn out we had here in Van Buren County today. It’s great. And of course we had the Spencer Mayor and the County Mayor.”
Blackburn said as she visits each county, she helps guide officials and citizens to the correct authority with their issues. She said some of the issues brought up today were related to the Tennessee Department of Transportation, some were Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, and some were federal.
“And that’s why it’s so important that your local and state officials work together so that issues are going to the right area and people aren’t wasting their time with an agency that doesn’t really have the decision making authority,” Blackburn said.
Blackburn said an issue concerning everyone these days is online safety for kids. She said she is working with a bipartisan group to legislate the Kids Online Safety Act. She said although there are many programs that educate us about the dangers children can be exposed to online, there is nothing that holds the big tech platforms responsible and makes them accountable.
“And this legislation would do that,” Blackburn said. “It would empower the FTC to go after them as well as the State Attorneys General.”
Blackburn will continue her county by county visits until she has met with leadership in all 95 counties.
