Senator Bailey Carrying Bill To Add Positions To Judicial Districts

State Senator Paul Bailey is proposing legislation that would provide additional support to Tennessee judicial districts.

Bailey said this would create 12 additional assistant district attorney general positions, also creating more secretarial and victim-witness coordinator positions. Bailey said an overwhelming amount of cases has been a chronic problem for judicial districts.

“There’s a big case load in the Upper Cumberland, in the 13th District Attorney General’s district,” Bailey said. “So the additional help would definitely be appreciated and needed.”

Bailey said this legislation was brought to him by the District Attorney General’s Conference. He said judicial districts have been trying to remedy this problem, but it has been exacerbated by the pandemic.

“There is a backlog in our court systems and on our DA’s, as well as our public defenders,” Bailey said. “To be able to get cases pushed through the courts. So there’s going to be a bigger workload on judicial systems.”

This legislation is Tennessee Senate Bill 1595. On April 13 it was listed as being recommended for passage to refer to Senate Finance, Ways, and Means Committee.
