Motorcyclists en route to Washington D.C. from Los Angeles will make an overnight stop in Cookeville Monday.
Riders are participating in the 10-day ‘Run for the Wall’ journey honoring fallen military members.
Zach Ledbetter is the vice president of visitor development for the Cookeville Visitors’ Bureau.
“Their mission is to ride for those who can’t. They ride to bring awareness to those that are missing in action, are prisoners of war, and to honor those killed in action,” Ledbetter said. “They do this all across the country. Their stop in Cookeville is the only overnight stop in Tennessee along the midway route, so that’s very special.”
Ledbetter said the Visitors’ Bureau anticipates nearly 375 riders to enter town and stop at the Leslie Town Centre.
“We welcome our local residents and urge them to help us welcome Run for the Wall back into town,” Ledbetter said. “Help us line Jefferson Avenue from Interstate 40 all the way up to 1st [Street]. Then they will end here at the Leslie Town Centre where we will host them for a private event. Anything inside the Leslie Town Centre that Monday is a private event specifically for those riders.”
Run for the Wall officially began Wednedsay with riders expected to reach the Vietnam Veterans Memorial this Friday. The organization reports over 1,600 riders have signed up in making the journey to Washington D.C.
