If you’re thinking about getting a Real ID, you have until later this year to do so.
Department of Safety and Homeland Security’s Communication Director Wesley Moster said this could impact several Tennesseans.
“The Real ID Act establishes minimum security standards,” Director Wesley said. “Beginning October 1st 2020, anyone that is wanting to access certain federal buildings, enter nuclear facilities, or board commercial flights in the United States needs to have a Real ID.”
Tennessee began issuing Real ID drivers licenses July 1 2019. Depending on your expiration cycle, the ID can cost between $12 and $28.
Director Moster said not all residents need this ID. Citizens can still vote, drive, and purchase alcohol or cigarettes without the Real ID.
“Some states it is mandatory, in Tennessee it is optional. It is not mandatory by any means, it’s just up to the individual to decide upon themselves if they want to get a REAL ID or not. In Tennessee you’ll need proof of citizenship or legal presence, proof of your social security number, and two proofs of residency.”
A Real ID has a star on the top corner of your drivers license.
