Upper Cumberland Regional Airport has developed a capital improvements project plan for incoming federal funds.
Airport Manager Dean Selby said a recent infrastructure bill allocates an additional $159,000 in revenues for the airport. He said the main focus for fund use will be ramp expansions.
“To get to the T hangars that we’re needing to build just to expand the capabilities of the aircraft, the number, and quantity of aircraft that we can have here,” Selby said. “And getting to them is as big a project as anything else. It’s almost like building a road, it’s not an easy task.”
Selby said expanding the ramp requires a lot of engineering and environmental study that needs to be completed. He said having the federal government involved assists with additional or unforeseen expenses.
Selby said he met with state officials Wednesday to create the plan. He said the next steps for the project will be to use the recently received ARC grant to start the T-hangar construction.
Selby said the ramp expansion will help connect those hangers and ease them through the next steps of development.
“Right now we’re kind of out of taxiways and ramp to actually build new hangars on so this is intended to expand the infrastructure where you can handle additional construction,” Selby said. “And I think that’s where we’re going with that.”
