Rainfall Important For Vegetation And Water Levels Entering Winter

With a very dry fall, this week’s rainfall comes at a good time to ensure plants have the needed moisture entering the winter.

That is according to Jackson County Ag Extension Director Dill Hughes. Hughes said the rain is important even though vegetation may seem like it is not growing.

“You have to remember that there are roots all under these plants, and these roots need moisture all through out the year,” Hughes said. “Not just during the growing season. The moisture helps them survive when they are not growing.”

Hughes said the winter cold and wind will cause plants to dry out and die without appropriate moisture. Hughes said the rainfall this week also helps the region catch up to the annual average which is below the normal.

Hughes said beyond the environment, the precipitation much needed considering the low water levels.

The rain is not all good news to some. Hughes said heavy rain this time of year can be a struggle for growing your live stock. Hughes said cattle especially burn more energy trying to walk through mud while farmers may be trying to market.
