Algood residents on Green Mountain Road will not pay tap fees when water extends to the area.
The Putnam County Commission approved using American Rescue Plan money to fund the water project Monday. Algood City Administrator Keith Morrison said by using federal money instead of county funding, water customers will be at no cost.
“I think it is good news for the residents in the county that we serve water to,” Morrison said. “I think this will give an opportunity to give fresh, clean drinking water to an area that hasn’t had that before and hopefully do it in an affordable manner for them.”
The Green Mountain water project was approved last year. Morrison said the city is currently working on an easement for the pump station. Morrison said once the easement is completed, the final plans would be ready to go out for bid.
“We’re hoping in the next 6 to 8 months to have the project underway,” Morrison said. “I’m not sure of what the completion timeline will be. It’ll probably be eight months, so within the next nine to 12 months we should have water taps available for customers to connect to.”
Morrison said to get the water over the mountain, a booster pump station is needed. Morrison said then a water line will come down to Green Mountain Road. The project cost is estimated at $415,000.
“Those residents that actually have homes in the area will get a tap a free from us,” Morrison said.
