Putnam Landfill Requires Leaves Out of Bag

The winds of Sunday blew lots of leaves from the tree. Are you going to spend the week trying to get rid of them?

Putnam County Solid Waste Director Keith Street said you can bring bagged leaves to collection sites. However, Street said when county residents bring those in, leaves need to come out of the bag.

“At each one of our collection sites around the county we have a leaf container,” Street said. “What we ask folks to do is to bring their bagged leaves to all the collection sites, once they get there we need to rip the bag open and put the loose leaves inside that container.”

Street said the landfill is a construction and demolition landfill, and burying plastic bags are not allowed. Street said plastic bags can be placed into the compactors on site so they can be disposed.

City residents have another option for disposing of leaves though.

“They can bag their leaves up at the edge of their yard and the city of Cookeville picks those up,” Street said. “Kind of like they do brush and furniture and things of that nature.”

Cookeville’s leaf collection runs Monday through Friday. This city service ramps up to Monday through Saturday as more leaves start falling towards the end of November.
