Putnam County Libraries Summer Reading Program Registrations Open

Registrations are now open for Putnam County Library’s summer reading program, “Oceans of Possibilities.”

Library Director Kathryn Wisinger said that this year’s program will feature storytime with STEM activities, an “Under the Sea tea party”, and an animal show. She said that while the program is meant to be fun, it’s also meant to encourage life-long reading habits.

“Our entire goal is to support reading and literacy and to really keep kids coming to the library all summer,” Wisinger said. “And all of the things we have are really educational and revolve around literacy skills.”

Wisinger said that for every 5 days that a child reads at least 20 minutes and logs their time, they will receive a prize book redeemable at any PCL branch. She said that the program is designed for readers of all ages.

“The actual reading logs that the kids turn in that’s a little different,” Wisinger said. “We try to incentive them to read every day for twenty minutes a day. So they pick up a little form and each day that they read, they check it off, they bring it back to the library and at the end of each week, they can get a prize. And this year they get an additional prize, so it’s a summer reading raffle where we put everyone’s name into a raffle and they have the chance to win an additional prize every week.”

Wisinger said that parents interested in registering their kids can contact any library branch for more information. She said that the program runs for 6 weeks, with the first reading log due on June 1st.
