The Putnam County Planning Committee approved on Monday regulations for short-term rental properties (STRP).
Commissioner Kathy Dunn said the regulations will help the county collect sales and hotel-motel taxes from those operating STRPs.
“Unfortunately, it’s my understanding that there’s probably at least 50 or 60 of these operating in the county,” Dunn said. “From talking with Freddie Nelson’s office, there’s probably only a handful of those who are properly permitted and remitting those taxes.”
The policy also requires a permit for each short-term rental unit being operated, with each permit costing $50 per year.
Dunn said the permit system also addresses safety issues.
“They’ll have to abide by the State of Tennessee Fire Marshal’s rules. As far as smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, and fire extinguishers,” Dunn said. “We wan them to have a safe environment for people who are paying them money to stay the night.”
The Putnam County Commission will consider the committee’s recommendation during the July 29 meeting.
