Putnam Co. Veterans Wall To Be Made Safer For Visitors

The Veterans Wall at the Putnam County Courthouse will receive some updates for safety and accessibility.

Mayor Randy Porter said the county plans on making a pathway that’s ADA-compliant to provide better access for veterans visiting.

“We’re going to fix a place in the courthouse lawn,” Porter said. “Make a walkway that will come in behind the wall, as it is now and put up some benches, and have a concrete pad so that you can get in easily with a wheelchair and so forth.”

Porter said that the current configuration is unsafe, due to it being near such a high traffic area. He said they also plan on replacing and updating the eternal flame.

Porter said because of the site’s popularity, he wants to ensure better access and better safety for all of its visitors.

“I see folks out there all the time,” Porter said. “I see daughters and sons bringing their fathers, and grandchildren bringing their grandfathers and grandmothers and folks to look at it. To stand there it’s just not real safe and not conducive to be able to enjoy it to the fullest extent.”

Porter said county employees hope to get the work underway before the end of the summer, and ideally finishing up by Veteran’s Day. While construction is occurring, Porter said he wanted to make clear that nothing would be removed from the area, only renovated and updated.
