Putnam BOE Selecting Committee To Name New K-8 School

The new Southwest Putnam County K-8 School will have its own identity in the near future.

The Putnam County Board of Education discussed plans to set a naming committee at the December board meeting. Board Member Kim Cravens said when the board selects community members to appoint, they can look out of their district.

Cravens said Park View Elementary parents being involved might be a good idea.

“I’m saying that if you’re thinking you need to get somebody who resides in lives in your district, I don’t feel that’s an absolute must,” Cravens said. “If that’s what you want, then by all means for sure.”

The committee will vote to select the school’s name, mascot and colors moving forward. The 13 person committee will consist of six community members, 6 school system employees and Director of Schools Corby King.

King said the goal is to have everything selected by February. He said the colors, mascot and name will be chosen by majority vote on the committee.

“If we get the committee named in December and then ask them to have the name and colors by the February board meeting,” King said. “That would give two months, let’s shoot for that.”

Upland Design Group said they can get general designs in place for whenever a selection is made. There will be a public hearing before finalizing the name of the new K-8 school.
