A properly-insulated home can help you save up to 80 percent on your heating bill.
Energy 1 Foam Insulation Supervisor Andy Baker said that a majority of heat loss in the house comes from crawl spaces or attics. He said that if you’re having issues with insulation, there are minor ways to improve the situation.
“One of the main things would be check around your windows and your doors, windows especially,” Baker said. “Some of the older windows you get into flash windows and stuff where the seals are worn out on them. Inspect your seals, clean them real good, make sure you get the dirt and grime stays out of them to where you can actually keep from getting that draft.”
Baker said that you can also cover grates where air flow can come in on things like stoves, but it’s important to make sure nothing is a fire hazard.
Baker said that spray foam insulation is the most effective way to insulate a home. He said that other types of insulation, such as fiberglass or blower insulation, sometimes require steps before installing like caulking.
