Pickett Ag Extension And School System Hosting Internet Safety Course

Pickett County Ag Extension partnering with the Pickett County School System to host an internet safety meeting for parents and students Tuesday.

Family and Consumer Science Extension Agent Amanda Woody will lead the parent session. She said she will review the dangers of the internet, social media privacy and mental health impacts to children.

“The school really saw a need for parents and students to learn about safety online,” Woody said. “They contacted us to help partner and teach that, because at the extension office, we do a lot of programs related to safety and youth.”

Woody said students will enter a separate session at the same time. Woody said another agent will go over internet etiquette and cyber bullying. The meeting starts at 6:00 p.m. at the Pickett K-8 library.

Woody said children today spend twice as much time in front of a screen versus playing outside. Woody said that is why it is important for parents to know the tools to protect their family.
