Pickett County High School’s boys basketball team will be hosting a bake sale to raise funds for the upcoming season.
The Saturday event begins at 7:30 a.m. at Bilbrey’s IGA. Head Coach Joseph Amonett said all proceeds will go towards uniform purchases and traveling expenses.
“It is a phenomenal event that our community has supported really fantastically,” Amonett said. “We have really hundreds of items that are donated that are home baked or home cooked. We have fresh breakfast that we also sell there at the event.”
Amonett said people can buy fresh fried pies and other baked goods. Amonett said even pre-prepared lasagnas and pastas will be available to purchase. Amonett said every donation means something and helps the team travel to Florida for a Christmas tournament.
“It is so good you can’t buy it at a store,” Amonett said. “We have people that come off Dale Hollow Lake that are always in town. They’ll come in from Ohio. They leave the lake to make sure that they get some of these fried pies or cakes.”
Amonett said a mixture of parents, grandparents and even Director of Schools Diane Elder all provide food. Amonett said the annual event is the team’s main fundraiser, so community participation goes a long way.
“We’re a small community, and it kind of takes an army,” Amonett said. “Our basketball team we try to make sure we represent our school system and our community in the way we dress and the way we act. All of this goes into helping us represent our community in the right way on the basketball court and while we are traveling.”
Bilbrey’s IGA is located at 8460 Highway 111 in Byrdstown. Amonett said the sale will continue until all items are sold.
