Overton’s Jason Garrett Receives Excellence Award From TN Association For Agricultural Agents

Overton’s UT Extension Agent Jason Garrett was named a recipient of the Hicks Award for Excellence by the Tennessee Association for Agricultural Agents.

Garrett said he was one of three extension agents in the state to receive the recognition. He said the award recognizes his efforts in agricultural educational programming.

“The benefit of my job is seeing people learn more about agriculture,” Garrett said. “For example, I grew up on a farm, I got a four-year degree in animal science from Tennessee Tech. I learned more working here for six years for the University of Tennessee Extension than I ever learned in college or in my personal experience farming. There is something new to learn every day.”

Garrett said his programs over the year include lawn maintenance, beef cattle farming, and feral hog tips. He said that his goal is put Overton UT Extension at the forefront of the field. He said the agency is top 10 of the state when it comes to participation in the Agriculture Enhancement program.

Garrett said while it’s nice to get the award, it’s more about the work itself. He said he’s thankful he gets to do important work in the community where he was born and raised.
