Overton Schools Utilizing VR Headsets For Career Exploration

The Overton County School System implementing virtual reality technology for students to explore career options.

CTE Director Teresa Johnson said the idea came from the Upper Cumberland Workforce Development. Johnson said the system partnered with the organization to get five VR headsets.

“When a student puts these headsets on, they can perform various tasks including culinary arts to changing oil in a car and such,” Johnson said. “We’re really excited about this opportunity.”

Johnson said the school system will be able to use the technology for one-year at each elementary school. Johnson said counselors will utilize the gear to show students their options before entering high school.

“It’s hands on, but through that virtual reality aspect,” Johnson said. “So, I’ve just seen a little portion of it but it looks like it is real exciting for these kids.”

Johnson said training has began among staff members on how to use the headsets. Johnson said five other school districts in the region also received the technology through the Workforce Development.
