Overton Extension Hosting Gardening Class Thursday

Overton UT Extension is helping people start their spring growing through a vegetable gardening class this Thursday.

Agriculture Agent Jason Garrett said that gardening has exploded in popularity. He said that a home garden is a great way to get agriculture exposure.

“I just thought this was a good idea to have a vegetable garden one-on-one class,” Garrett said. “That just starts from all the basic principles that one might want to learn and take note of before they start their small garden.”

Garrett said that there are two key factors to a successful garden: a soil test, and the site selection for the garden.

“We want to make sure that we put a garden on an area that’s going to be well-drained with well-drained soil under it,” Garrett said. “Also we need to talk about time to plant, cool and warm season vegetables, all the basics that one might want to take advantage of and learn.”

Garrett said that specialist Lucas Holman will be the guest speaker. Garrett said that this class will be a great tool to take the first step to have a successful home garden.

“If you have any hesitation or any ideas that aren’t working if you’ve had any problems with gardening in the past,” Garrett said. “And somehow in your plan it just isn’t coming together, it would be a good learning experience to come and check this out.”

The free class at the Overton County Extension Office will start at 1 p.m.
