The Upper Cumberland Habitat for Humanity will look to provide a home for an Overton County family next year.
Community Outreach Coordinator Trent Carter said they have found a lot and are ready to build.
“It’s a great location and it’s one of the larger lots that we ever had actually so it’ll be a really good size home that we could build. We’ll also be looking for a family in January and February in Overton county so we’ll be doing the selection for the home ownership program at that time as well.”
The organization purchased the lot on Thomas Road in September. Habitat is planning on beginning construction as soon as Fall 2020.
This is the first home Habitat will build in this area in over 3 years.
“Because of resources and volunteers and all the fundraising that goes into it, we probably won’t be able to build as often in Overton county as we do in Putnam,” Carter said. “So more than likely we’re looking at building one home every 12 to 16 months. We do want to keep helping and finding and building affordable housing in Overton county.”
This home building pace is slower than Habitat International is used to. However, Carter assures that Overton is building as often as they can.
Due to the demographics of this county, the people who benefit the most from Habitat are senior citizens.
“We also have put a big focus on senior home repairs because there seems to be a greater need for that in Overton than affordable housing so that’s been a program that really we’ve been doing for little over a year now. We’ve successfully completed quite a bit of projects with that and we’ll continue that in addition to looking for land.”
Their office can be located off of Church Street in Livingston.
