Overton Schools Approve One-Time Money For Teachers

The Overton County Board of Education approved a $700 stipend for all full-time employees Tuesday.

Interim Director of Schools Donnie Holman said a portion of the second round of COVID money is being used to make this happen.

“One of the criteria that we were allowed to go to in that was hazard pay. That was one of areas of that,” Holman said. “Most all the districts in the Upper Cumberland are doing or have done the same thing.”

Holman said the extra pay will come to employees in May. The Board of Education also approved a $506 bonus for certified employees. Holman said that money came to the county through the state’s two percent nonrecurring funds for teachers.

“We have more teachers in our system than the BEP says we should have or pay for,” Holman said. “So, everybody is not really getting two percent. It’s not going to be a full two percent, and I went to the extent of making a personal explanation for that so everybody could see how that money is divided out.”

Holman said the bonus will be distributed this month.
