Overton County has located property for a new county services building.
County Executive Ben Danner said the county used a $300,000 donation to purchase the old Republican Headquarters building on West Broad Street.
“The county has not built a new county services building for over 100-years. 1899 the courthouse was built and that’s the last county building we’ve built,” Danner said. “We’ve never really had a really good central located county building and I think this opportunity is a really good time to get this going.”
Danner said the county will tear down the building and begin discussions on rebuilding it in the near future.
The old Livingston hospital serves as the current county services building, but Danner said the facility is beyond repair.
“I think it would be good for Overton County to have a county services building it’s proud of,” Danner said. “The current building needs $200,000 worth of water pipes, it’s not ideally located, and it’s not handicapped accessible.”
Danner said a lot of work will need to be done before demolition and construction begins for the new building. He said the county may need a permit from TDOT in order to tear down the existing building on West broad.
“It’s really close to the right-of-way for the state highway, but the highway department and city of Livingston is going to help us demolish it,” Danner said.
An Overton County citizen donated $300,000 cash to the county earlier this year for the purpose of finding property for a new county services building.
