A one-time COVID payment of some $310,000 will be coming to Overton County Schools through its school board.
The Board of Education approved a $100 per pupil allocation. School Board Member William Abston said the money will serve as a supplement for when COVID halted fundraisers.
“It will allow the teachers to get more supplies to help with the students like pencils, markers, different things like that,” Abston said. “Or be able to do different things that they want to do with the teachers that normally they would have to fund raise for.”
The per student funding is divided by categories. Principals will receive $50 for each student and teachers $30. Cafeterias, gyms and libraries would receive $5 and $2.50 for art and music. Abston said the one-time payment would come from the school system’s general fund.
“Like the fall festivals and everything, the teachers get some of that money. The school gets some of that money,” Abston said. “So that was the premise of breaking this down and allowing it to go in those different areas.”
A time frame of distribution is unknown at this time. School Board Chair Mike Hayes said the school system would need to figure out if the money is placed in one fund or each school would have its own lump sum to distribute.
