Oldham Named To NCAA Board Of Governors

Tennessee Tech President Phil Oldham has been named to the NCAA Board of Governors.

Oldham is one of 25 members, and the second president to serve from the Ohio Valley Conference. His term will end in August 2023.

The NCAA board oversees college athletics for Division I, II, and III levels.

“As a president, it’s the first time I’ve had the opportunity to really be in a position of responsibility over athletics,” Oldham said. “And sort of the ultimate is to serve on an NCAA governance board.”

Oldham had previously served on the board for Division I.

In a press release, Oldham said that he and the rest of the board plan on bringing solutions to the current challenges intercollegiate athletics are facing.

“You have to go back nearly 60 to 80 years to find a time with this much uncertainty and change and unpredictability of college athletics,” Oldham said. “Realistically, no one knows how this is all going to go, but we all have the common goal of preserving what we appreciate about college sports and what it brings to the lives of so many individuals and fans. The dynamics, however, are very challenging. I don’t know if anybody has good answers. The NCAA is trying to respond, but it’s going to be a challenge. We need good ideas and a lot of smart people sitting around and, hopefully, we’ll figure some of this out.”
