A local group of Jackson and Smith County residents are forming a Friends group for Cordell Hull Lake.
Treasurer Natasha Deane said the group has already received support from the Army Corp of Engineers and currently awaits for its non-profit certification.
“The Cordell Hull Lake is very much overlooked in the Upper Cumberland,” Deane said. “It’s less popular for the bigger boats, but actually, more popular for some of the quieter activities.”
Deane said the goal of the group is to bring more recreation opportunities to the lake. Deane said hiking, fishing and kayaking are all activities the group wants to bring through volunteering and fundraising.
“We think the time is right to raise awareness on these things,” Deane said. “I think people are hungry for some quiet and restoration, but this place offers that.”
Deane said so far, the group has created a founding board that made its by-laws. Deane said it will be another six months before the non-profit status is achieved to accept members.
