Monterey Mayor JJ Reels told city employees and Aldermen Friday he would step down as Mayor effective Monday.
Reels cited ongoing medical issues as the reason. Reels said the issue is non-life-threatening.
Reels said he would issue a statement before Monday’s meeting. Reels said he made the decision shortly after announcing in February he would not seek re-election.
As for a replacement, Reels said that Aldermen would select a replacement, based on advice from MTAS at the University of Tennessee.
Reels said he sought advice from family and friends before making the final decision to resign. He said city employees were supportive during Friday’s meeting and thanked him for his work as mayor.
As for his future, Reels said he would remain in Monterey and wants to stay involved.
