Monterey’s Water Department working on rebuilding its main turbine after a “major malfunction.”
Mayor Nathan Walker said after the turbine seized up, crews had to come and pull it out.
“That was one of those issues that if it came apart right it was going to be a $10,000 to $30,000 project, if it came apart wrong, it was going to be about $100,000 project,” Walker said. “Thank goodness they were able to get it apart.”
Walker said the current rebuild price is also estimated between $10,000 and $30,000. He said Water Plant Superintendant Duane Jarrett is working on getting a quote for a replacement unit in the $30,000 range.
Walker said the city got about 15 years out of this unit since the last rebuild. He said they will get input from Jarrett at the next Water Plant Committee meeting to decide how to move forward.
