A Monterey resident may be asked to give up his chickens.
Mayor Bill Wiggins said neighbors have complained that the man’s birds cause too much noise and too many foul odors.
“I know if you travel the city in the dawn or the dusk it sounds like Old McDonald’s farm out there, but finally we got a complaint,” Wiggins said. “The ordinance is very clear. It talks about all kinds of wildlife…animals and fowls.”
Wiggins said property owners must have chickens contained and kept at least 1,000 feet from homes or businesses. The ordinance also states that animals and fowls cannot be a nuisance.
“I’m getting ready to send this property owner a letter with a copy of the ordinance because the neighbors are raising Cain and I don’t blame them,” Wiggins said. “We dealt with this guy about a year ago over sheep.”
Wiggins said the resident will have one week to address the complaints or risk losing his birds.
