The Monterey Technology Committee meets Wednesday to discuss a proposed social media policy for the town.
Mayor Bill Wiggins said the policy establishes an official website for Monterey and sets rules for social media sites operated by the city.
“This may be a little bit late, but we’ve got to reign in and establish a definite policy for the protection of the town of Monterey,” Wiggins said. “Monterey has a website, the police department and fire department have Facebook pages, and we’ve probably got some individuals out there discussing city business.”
The Monterey Board of Mayor and Aldermen delayed the adoption of the policy during last month’s meeting. The board wanted more time to discuss the policy during a Technology Committee meeting.
Wiggins said Monterey has considered adopting the policy for more than a year.
“Information has it that we better establish a policy pronto,” Wiggins said. “We need to get a grip on this and know exactly how to address it.”
The policy also addresses social media and internet conduct for city employees. The Monterey Technology Committee meets at 6 p.m. Wednesday inside city hall.
