Monterey will seek grant funding to renovate and install new sidewalks in the downtown area.
The Monterey Board of Aldermen approved moving forward with the funding possibility Monday. Grant Writer Dawn Kupferer said the town could repair walkways along Commercial Avenue.
“Now that we have the new trail section that links the high school and the elementary school, we have an issue with the sidewalk in front of the Whitaker Park,” Kupferer said. “We have a lot of water that goes through that ditch, and it really needs a culvert.”
Mayor JJ Reels first sited the drainage issues and safety concerns at the park in May. Kupferer said the grant application would include an eight foot sidewalk in front of Whitaker Park.
Kupferer said a 1,000 foot extension of the town’s trail from Oak Street to Woodcliff Road and additional sidewalks also included. Kupferer said she thinks Monterey would have a good application based on the needs.
Kupferer said up to $600,000 can be awarded with a 20 percent cash match from the town. The deadline to submit an application comes in December.
