Monterey Receives $1 Million Grant for Stormwater Drainage Projects

The city of Monterey will use a $1.178 million grant to improve stormwater drainage.

The city applied for the competitive grant meant for resource protection back in August. Consulting Engineer Jerry Warren told the Board of Aldermen Monday night the money will help with some long-term issues, such as from Railroad Avenue to Industrial Avenue.

“We had the stormwater and drainage improvements that we’ve been looking at for some time, and this was a means to request some funding for that,” Warren said. “And we got the letter on Friday that the town of Monterey has been selected for a 100 percent grant.”

Warren said they also hope to use funds for bioretention areas around Meadow Creek Park, and improvements for the city depot. Warren said the grant includes funding for the construction, surveying, and design related to the drainage projects.

“I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again: To be on top of a hill, Monterey is the hardest place to try to drain water I’ve ever seen,” Warren said.

The grant is a part of American Rescue Plan funding.

“There may be some opportunities there to work together on some things, that way maybe a little here and a little there kind of adds up to a lot at the end of the day,” Warren said.

In other business, the aldermen approved an ordinance amending the city’s zoning code in regard to types of regulated child-care centers.
