Monterey native and artist Larry Morrison Vaden makes his literary debut with his novella, “A Touch of Mauve.”
The story is of two star-crossed lovers–one a singer, one a painter–and how they navigate a hectic romance. Vaden said he found his inspiration in music.
“While painting, usually I would have music on, sort of semi-classical, or good pop music by female artists. I thought, ‘why can’t we have a movie about an artist,'” said Vaden. It was that thought which led him to write a novella he hopes someone will turn into a movie one day.
Using his talents as a painter, Vaden spread his original artworks and poems throughout the book. He even wrote an original song to accompany it. But music wasn’t his only influence–his childhood in Monterey served as inspiration for conversations between his characters.
“It tells a little history of the town. While they’re painting, they talk back and forth and talk about their growing up years. I used some of my growing up years as the years of this guy named Bernard,” said Vaden.
Vaden said he hopes to bring some recognition to the town of Monterey by using it in parts of the book.
This Sunday, Vaden will have a book signing and meet-and-greet at the Monterey Depot Museum. A portion of his book sales will benefit both the Monterey Depot and the Cookeville Art Studio and Gallery. The signing is at the Monterey Depot Museum from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
