Monterey Board of Aldermen has hired an engineer to explore the process of turning Black Bottom Field into a multi-use field.
Mayor Nathan Walker said that architect Jerry Warren will work to get preliminary site drawings done, including doing formal measurements, and putting together a plan so the town might get better cost estimates.
“The idea behind that is of course like we said it to make it a multi-use field,” Walker said. “So that softball can still be played, soccer can be played, football can be played.”
Walker said the land will be a big enough area for all sports to be able to separate out and practice. Walker said that the county is in charge of taking care of those fields, and that they would have a say so in how the fields are developed.
At a recent Building and Grounds meeting, members decided to spend some $150,000 of state funding for the project. Alderman Bill Wiggins said that this could be a huge plus for the town of Monterey, and might open the door for a new city need: a sports council.
“This notion of a sports council, I’ve seen this welling up and becoming kind of a priority here,” Wiggins said. “We’re getting it on both sides. Sports complexes, events scheduling. We’re going to resurrect that?”
Walker said that his idea would be to have a meeting and make some sort of committee at the August meeting and discuss it further then.
Alderman Alex Garcia said that he would like to have a meeting with the engineer beforehand to give some preliminary direction before he begins to get quotes.
