Monterey High School Theatre Presents: “Our Place”

The Monterey High School Drama Department is presenting its spring production “Our Place” by Terry Gabbard, a short play for all ages about human connection.

Director Carrie Brown-Jones said she hopes the community will come and support a show she chose both for its poignancy and to honor her senior performers.

“They’ve missed out on a lot of traditional things that most seniors get to experience. I just fell in love with the script and I wanted to do something special for them so it’s just been a really exciting time for us to be able to highlight them with their graduation coming up,” said Brown-Jones.

The show’s series of scenes all take place at one location: an abandoned dock. Brown-Jones said she thinks the biggest message of the show is that even though everyone has a different journey we’re all connected in some way–just like the characters in the play are connected by the dock.

“Every person’s journey shares certain things, every person comes to certain places and has these poignant moments and for us at Monterey High School, Monterey High School is ‘Our Place.’ It is our place where we’ve made connections and made memories and so putting this together with a group of kids that have been together for four years has been really special.”

Brown-Jones said connections are particularly important after a year of distancing and isolation.

“That sense of human connection, especially after a year where there’s been so much distance and so much turmoil, is just a beautiful thing to remember that deep down we’re all human and what really matters in life is each other,” said Brown-Jones.

The show runs April 30th and May 1st at 6 p.m. in the MHS auditorium. Tickets are $2.
