The Monterey Cup and Saucer will permanently close on Tuesday following the purchase of the restaurant.
New owner David Caratachea said the Cup and Saucer will become a Mexican restaurant in the coming months.
“We are very excited to come to Monterey. We have other Mexican restaurants in Tennesse,” Caratachea said. “They are called Los Agaves. We have one in Lafayette, Tennessee, one in Whitehouse, Tennessee and a couple in Kentucky.”
Caratachea said the building will be remodeled before the opening of Los Agaves.
“It’s going to be sad for some people, I understand that building and that place has been there for many years,” Caratachea said. “I mean, people have great memories. I just want to try to leave it as it is right now, but we just have to make some changes.”
The Monterey Cup and Saucer was first introduced in the 1940s by Bernard and Robert McDonald. The last owner Paul Weist ran the restaurant for approximately 20 years.
Caratachea said he decided that the Cup and Saucer was the best fit for the Mexican restaurant.
“I think the night before, The Cup and Saucer was put on the market so that was one of the options we had,” Caratachea said. “And we went with [our realitor] to look around and see all the properties around and that was a better fit for our purpose, that’s why we decided to go with that one.”
The Monterey Cup and Saucer will cease operations on April 16.
