The Monterey Building and Grounds Committee created a preliminary checklist on how to spend $200,000 of state funding Tuesday.
The state budget included money to be specifically used to improve Meadow Creek Park and construct a soccer field. Mayor Nathan Walker said a good baseline to start at is $150,000 for a multi-use field.
“We can’t obviously complete our vision for Meadow Creek Park for that amount of money, but we can complete the soccer field,” Walker said. “I think getting one something completely done instead of two things halfway done makes more sense here in the short-term.”
The proposed location for the field is the town’s Black Bottom Field. The some three acres is located at the corner of Whittaker Street and East Railroad Avenue.
“That’s a location that we have conveniently located inside the city limits that is capable of having a regulation size soccer field with parking,” Walker said. “Parking is going to be one of the big issues with any sporting type venue I think.”
As for Meadow Creek Park, the committee created a priority list to spend the $50,000. Cultural Administrator Rafferty Cleary said trail building and signage were among the highest wants.
Walker said the committee would next need to find cost estimates to refine the initial plans.
“I think that is the first step in the thing, and then we’ll have a better idea where we are at,” Walker said. “Who do we contact to develop that?”
A committee recommendation on spending to the Board of Aldermen will not be able to come until August when the money reaches the local level.
Another work session was scheduled for June 27th at the Black Bottom Field. Committee members will measure the land to see if a soccer field can fit on the property. An update on Meadow Creek Park was scheduled for July 7th.
