Monterey Boys Golf Wins District Title

The Monterey boys golf team won district 7A honors on Monday at Southern Hills Golf Course and will move onto regionals next week at Southern Hills on Tuesday.

The five who submitted scores were Garrett Wessles, Landen Raines, Brayden Reams, Hudson Craigo and Braden Lee. Their score of 320 won the tournament by 52 strokes and coach Ray Lee said this tournament exemplified what their program is about.

“All of them top to bottom were solid,” Lee said. “We only had one kid who didn’t have his best day, struggled a little bit. But our number five stepped up and picked it up a little bit from his norm. And that’s been the theme all year. Usually one kid doesn’t have a good day but somebody else is there to pick them up.”

This season the Wildcats have been led by their two senior golfers, Wessles and Raines, and Monday’s tournament was no different with Wessles shooting a 78 and Raines winning the solo division with a score of 74. Ray Lee said having their leadership and experience is priceless and that the rest of the lineup follows their lead.

“Our three through five has kind of shuffled back and forth,” Lee said. “Two our of the three of them are always on and having a good day, if one of them does not. Which is a big deal in team golf, it makes a big difference.”

Coach John Looper said that it was this teams’ pre-season goal to get to the state tournament and while the tournament win was not necessarily needed to move onto regionals, the boys wanted to make a statement.

“Everybody is playing well and we feel confident,” Lee said. “They are out here practicing right now working on getting better, working on correcting some of the flaws in their game from yesterday. And then just moving forward, the goal is to come out on top.”
