Cookeville-based J&H Construction will conduct Monterey’s sewer rehabilitation project.
Monterey’s board of mayor and aldermen awarded a $373,270 base bid to the company on Monday.
grant writer Dawn Kupferer said the work will include repairs to aging sewer lines along Industrial Drive and Standing Stone Road.
“Some of these areas are from the 1930s and 1940s and some of them are even clay,” Kupferer said. “The biggest issue is that these old lines have cracks in them and when it rains the water goes into the sewer lines and into the sewer system.”
Consulting engineer Nathaniel Green said the bid ended up being $52,000 less than the total price tag for the project. Monterey will use the remaining funds to conduct additional rehab work around town.
“We had two added alternates. The first one was $80,000 and our total budget for construction was $425,000,” Green said. “We couldn’t add it that $80,000, but there is a good chance that we will be able to do a majority of that.”
Monterey received a $475,000 Community Development Block Grant last year for the purpose of completing the project.
