Monterey has started the search process to find a new ladder truck to purchase.
During Monday’s Board of Alderman meeting, Alderman Nathan Walker gave Mayor JJ Reels and the fire department the go ahead to start searching for a vehicle. Right now, the plan of action is to sell the inoperable ladder truck and use the funds towards a new one.
Purchasing options, such as leasing to own, were discussed. Walker said he wished Monterey could have originally taken the deal of leasing to own a new ladder truck earlier this year, but COVID restricted the town’s budget.
At the time, the truck found by Fire Chief Kevin Peters was five yearly payments of $16,000. Walker said this was a good deal especially for the quality of the truck.
The need for a new ladder truck became more apparent after Monterey’s Perdue Farms Plant received damage from a grease fire. Reels said the lack of an apparatus caused a two hour delay while Monterey waited for aid from neighboring departments.
