The Millard Oakley Public Library will host its first online book club meeting tomorrow.
The club will meet via zoom every first Tuesday of the month at 11:00 a.m.. Library Director Cynthia Julian-Simmons said this month’s novel is Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand.
“It is just as simple as trying to connect again with these people that we are not able to do it in person, so we want to find a way to do it online,” Simmons said. “We are excited to try it with this new technology and finding a new way to have the same type of meeting as before.”
Simmons said library members can find most books used for the club online on Tennessee READS or through the library. Joining the club is free, and using a camera is not required when discussing.
“You do not have to be seen. You can just have your name up there and listen to each other talk,” Simmons said. “You can mute yourself if you have noise in the background. There are various ways to take advantage of this technology and still meet with the group while remaining safe.”
People interested may join by clicking a link on the Library’s main Facebook page or website. The code to join the zoom meeting is 822-9968-9430. Simmons said the club will use a wide variety of books.
“It is nice to broaden everyone’s horizons,” Simmons said. “There are times we all read book in book clubs that we really enjoyed that we would not pick on our own. Every once in a while, you get one that is not really your taste.”
Simmons said the book club is a great way to make friends in a safe way. Tomorrow’s meeting will be the first of the summer.
