McGugin Purchases Land With Intention For Travel Center On Tennessee Avenue

A large travel center could make its way to Tennessee Avenue in the near future.

Owner Harry McGugin said that he recently bought some 12 acres to create a 23,000-square-foot center. He said his intention is to have it complete with a gift shop, convenience store, and gas pumps for both diesel and regular fuel.

“We think it will do extremely well there with the factories that are there already and some that are coming in and there’s going to be stuff being added there all the time,” McGugin said. “And with the fairgrounds, I understand there is a potential hotel in the works. So we just think that exit is going to develop and develop really fast, and we want to be the first to it,”

McGugin said that he is still early in the process. He said he hopes to also bring in an international food chain to be a partner at the center.

McGugin said that right now, the timeline for the center is estimated at some two years. He said that it’s still early in the process, and some things are subject to change as he moves forward.

“I have talked to someone over there at the (Planning Department) office about the functionality of the road and the possibility of bringing diesel trucks from the road,” McGugin said. “But we haven’t made it that far year.”
