Livingston Updates Firing Range Guidelines

The Livingston City Board of Mayor and Aldermen passed the second readings of two ordinances to allow firing ranges within city limits Monday evening.

City Attorney John Meadows said one ordinance makes permits firing ranges to operate within Livingston.

“It makes an exception for the prohibition against the discharge of firearms in the incorporation of the town of Livingston,” Meadows said. “For those people who are doing it at a commercial shooting gallery or fire range.”

The Board of Mayor and Aldermen also made an amendment to the City Building Codes specifically for firing ranges.

“The city had some interest in coming up with some regulations concerning the safety and construction of commercial shooting galleries and fire ranges,” Meadows said. “And the city was limited, the only way that we could address that was to make an amendment to our building code.”

Meadows said the amendment adopts construction and safety standards specific to the firing ranges.

Mayor Curtis Hayes said the firing range ordinances came before the board previously by a local business.
