Envision Livingston and the Livingston Revitalization Committee plans to continue proposing revisions to the Livingston property maintenance codes.
Chairman of the Livingston Revitalization Committee Ray Evans said the committee abandoned the efforts in March 2018.
“Vice Mayor Winningham a month or so ago suggested that we start the process again. And so this time rather than doing four or five modifications to the code all at once,” Evans said. “we are sort of doing a section at a time. Which is probably more fair to the board. They can take the time to truly review it and understand it. ”
The first portion of the revisions included a junk motor vehicle ordinance. The ordinance passed on the first reading last week.
“We were delighted that they passed the ordinance on first reading at the meeting the other night,” Evans said. “[We] look forward to another meeting in January to get it passed on second reading and finalized.”
Evans said there are multiple revisions that need to be addressed, including junkyard codes and general upkeep of property.
“Livingston simply does not currently have any municipal code regarding slum clearance. And so that one is very important to us,” Evans said. “The committee hasn’t decided nor have we have had any encouragement from the board of mayor and aldermen as to which one of those three or so would be considered next.”
Evans said the committee realized property codes cause controversy among the citizens and the board as well. Evans said he can understand the lack of property codes in the county limits, but not within the city.
“But if you are in a city situation where you have neighbors on each side of you that are trying to maintain their property nicely and you allow your property to deteriorate and just become a sort of cancer to the community,” Evans said. “That’s not fair to your neighbors. So that is the primary purpose of some of the things that we are trying to do.”
Evans said Envision Livingston and the Revitalization Committee want to help clean up and better maintain Livingston.
